Warning re Breeders/FIP/unhealthy kittens PDF Print E-mail
Written by Melanie

Over the past few years I have heard from numerous people about some specific breeders that are unfortunately breeding with cats that carry disease and infection. Some of these breeders have been aware that thier lines have had problems for MANY, MANY years but yet they continue to breed with the same animals over and over again rather than desexing the offending animals and starting again with unrelated animals.

I have spent a lot of time putting together the "TIPS FOR BUYING A KITTEN" and "THE ROLE OF A GOOD BREEDER" in our resources menu. If you follow this advise closely I believe you will stear clear of the offinding breeders. I will not mention names under any circumstances but want people out there to have a good experience and purchase a lovely natured kitten that lives a long and healthy life.

Below I have attached a VET REPORT from a lady that contacted me after having a horrible experience with a kitten she purchased from one of the breeders I am referring to above. This kitten died of FIP and she is keen to make other people aware that SOME breeders don't have the kittens best interest at heart. At her request I have attached a report from her vet indicating that the kitten died from FIP.

 HISTOPATHOLOGY REPORT                                 Case No. V09/1701

 CLINICAL NOTES

Acute onset anaemia, anorexia and pain palpation of R kidney

 MACROSCOPIC EXAMINATION

"Kidney". The specimen consists of a portion of kidney measuring

35x20x12mm. 2 representative sections taken in 2 separate cassettes A

 and B. (vs/ms)

 MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION

Diffusely the capsule is expanded by numerous viable and degenerate

neutrophils, lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages, plump fibroblasts,

abundant fibrin and collagen, haemorrhage and oedema. Multifocally

within the capsule, venule lumina are filled with eosinophilic granular

material with entrapped erythrocytes and leukocytes. The venule walls

are obscured by previously described inflammatory cells. Multifocally

extending into the superficial cortical interstitum and within the

deeper cortical interstitium are moderate to abundant numbers of

inflammatory cells that surround and separate glomeruli, tubules and

blood vessels. There are multiple vessels within the cortex the walls of

which are disrupted and obscured by an eosinophilic fibrilla material

consistent with fibrinoid vascular necrosis. Multifocally there is mild

cortical interstitial fibrosis that effaces and replaces normal

architecture and extends from the cortex towards the medulla.

 DIAGNOSIS

VASCULITIS AND NEPHRITIS, PYOGRANULOMATOUS, MARKED WITH MARKED DIFFUSE

FIBRONOSUPPURATIVE CAPSULITIS, FIBRIN THROMBI AND TUBULAR DEGENERATION

 COMMENT

The histopathology is consistent with feline infectious peritonitis

 virus infection.
